My recipe for the month of April is one of my favorite Mezcal cocktail recipes: the marvelous, smoking hot, kicks-like-a-mule, Mezcaltini! I first met this spirit on a trip to Oaxaca in the south of Mexico, where it hails from.
Mezcal is definitely an acquired taste. It has been described as having a nose akin to gasoline/paint stripper or liquid smoke. Maybe not the perfect cocktail for the faint-hearted, but those who know me know I like a challenge …even in liquid form.
You may wonder why I am featuring it if I describe it this way. Well, there is no buzz quite as quick-acting as a sip of smoky Mezcal. It is a huge part of the Mexican beverage culture and is now apparently quite the cool, trendy thing to imbibe.
Of course, there are brands and then there are luxury brands. I once experienced a Mezcal tasting with a master Mescalera in Oaxaca and, although I professed to be able to taste the nuances at different price points, if truth be told… I really couldn’t.
Having said all that, I really do like this drink. I like the unique Mexican-ness of it. It makes me think of the verdant green rolling hills of central Mexico, horses, leather, rancheros, and, well… Bar B Qs.
Miguel’s “Red-Eye-Sock-it-to-You” Mezcaltini

- 2 ozs Mezcal (we like Sabia Lua)
- 1 oz Campari
- 1/2 teaspoon runny honey
- 1 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 4 oz cranberry juice.
Directions
Put ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Add all ingredients to shaker. Shake well. Pour over ice cubes.
Served: On the rocks; poured over ice
Drinkware: Short rocks glass or any type of glass you want
Just think, you could be savoring this truly Mexican libation under a tropical sky if you book now for your next vacation.
