Not all of our guests are staying in and around Punta Mita, many are up in Sayulita enjoying the exclusive enclave of Punta Sayulita with its own private beach club, or staying in homes situated on the magnificent San Pancho Beach.
But wherever you are staying while on vacation, at some point I bet you’ll end up in the central plaza of Sayulita. This really is the hub of all things “happening” in the area. You may be on a day trip for some serious shopping or maybe you wanted some fun nightlife and are scoping out local restaurants and bars. Either way…
You cannot miss Chocobanana!
This place is not a restaurant, it’s an institution! I don’t remember ever being in Sayulita without stopping for a coffee, a frozen choco-banana or a meal… it’s just a part of what you do there.
The brainchild of owner Tracey Willis, the concept of dipping one of Mexico’s most bountiful local fruits – the banana – into chocolate, freezing it and serving it on a stick is just brilliant! Especially if you’re a surfer on the run, you get your fibre, potassium, minerals, sugars and protein all in one!
Chocobanana – the goto place for a hearty Sayulita breakfast
Huge, heaping plates are offered up as breakfast specials – eggs, eggs and more eggs with egg-rything(!) you can think of on the side.
My personal favourites are the baked goods – deep, moist, crumbly muffins in many flavours – along with a cup of strong, frothy house cappuccino are the way to go for me. The brownies are quietly decadent and the carrot cake…OK, you get the picture, it’s all very good.
This is a great lunch spot when battling a hangover. (Well, so I’ve been told – not that I have had many hangovers personally!) Burgers, fries and club sandwiches abound.
Location, Location, Location
The other wonderful attribute of this restaurant is the location. Located on the main plaza, Chocobanana is as central as it gets in the village. Not only does it serve a hearty Sayulita breakfast, Chocobanana offers THE BEST people watching, too. You’ll find yourself facing the industrious Huichol Indians creating their wares before your eyes; crazy, barefoot surfer dudes balancing their boards as they walk by; hippie chicks; bikini-clad mamas and tattooed bikers… All are part of the show and the great experience.
I recommend you go for the full eggs and everything breakfast. Then come back again throughout the day for the coffee. And, definitely a MUST-try, the choco-banana.
