A Michelada is a cerveza preparada — Spanish for “beer with some other business going on” — with a hazy past. One legend tells of General Don Augusto Michel, who roused his troops for the 1910 Mexican Revolution by fortifying their beers with lime and hot sauce. A less epic tale credits Michel Ésper, a humble man from San Luís Potosí. Perhaps least impressive (if most believable) is that the name simply slurs together Mexican slang.
Michelada
Adapted from How They Make Micheladas in Mexico at the BonAppetit blog.
Ingredients
- 1 32-oz. bottle chilled Clamato (about 4 cups)
- 1 32-oz. bottle or 3 12-oz. bottles chilled Mexican lager
- 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
- 1 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp. hot sauce (such as Tabasco)
- 1 tsp. Maggi Seasoning
- 2 Tbsp. kosher salt
- 1/2 tsp. chili powder
- Lime wedges (for serving)
Directions
Mix salt and chili powder on a small plate. Rub rims of pint glasses with lime wedges and dip in salt mixture. Fill glasses with ice, add Michelada mixture, and garnish with lime wedges.
This is a really great pick-me-up drink. It may seem a bit weird to mix beer with tomato but it’s definitely worth a try!
Another alternative to curing a hangover is to take a look at this month’s featured properties, book a week’s vacation, jump on a plane and I’ll meet you at the villa with a nice jug of Michelada to personally introduce you to my February hangover cure!
